  • Nursery

Herring Run Native Plant Nursery carries a wide array of trees and shrubs native to Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region.  This allows us to plant at schools, parks, and other public spaces, and allows homeowners to purchase trees for their yards knowing that their efforts will help the environment and provide habitat for native wildlife.  All of our planting efforts help to increase tree canopy and provide many benefits to our watershed.

Featuring over 100 hard to find native trees, shrubs and perennial plants in pots and heights that are easy to transport home.

    History

Beginning in 1994, HRWA created a native plant nursery to improve our ability to create greener and healthier streets, parks, and streams within the Herring Run watershed.  With thanks to Mount Pleasant Golf Course for providing the space, and our numerous volunteers who assist with nursery maintenance, we have continued to expand both our selection and planting efforts over the years.  In 2007 HRWA took a Social Enterprise class at the University of Baltimore to develop a business plan for earning revenue from our nursery to support our mission.  The instructors selected our project for a $10,000 award.

    Philosophy

Herring Run Natives Nursery strives to provide native plants sourced from the local seed, where possible, with minimal environmental impact from production.  We do not use any pesticides or herbicides.  Our plants are grown in containers and irrigated with city water.  We do sell some cultivars of native plants.
