STEP 3: Program Representative Assesses the Property
At the site visit, program staff assess your property and downspouts to determine if disconnection is safe. Variables include slopes, property lines, driveway and sidewalk location, roof area, and yard space. At this time, or before, you will need to sign a waiver form. The waiver form acknowledges that you, the property owner, has given us, program staff, permission to access you property and complete the downspout disconnection labor. The waiver also states that once the work is complete, you, the property owner, are responsible for the disconnected downspout and conducting any maintenance that is required.
STEP 4: Sign Maintenance Agreement
We ask all participants to sign a maintenance agreement. This agreement specifies that the home owner is responsible for the downspout disconnection, rain barrel and rain garden once program staff has completed the installation.
STEP 5: Downspout Disconnection
Downspout disconnection involves cutting the downspout and redirecting roof runoff into the yard.
STEP 6: Rain Barrels and Rain Gardens
Rain barrels and rain gardens can be installed at the same time as the downspout disconnection.
STEP 7: Maintain
Maintenance for a disconnected downspout, a rain barrel, or a rain garden is typically minimal. It is a good idea to take a look at your disconnected downspouts a couple of times a year just to be sure that the downspout extension is still directing water away from the house. In the event that the extension is damaged, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to replace it. Similarly, it is a good idea to check on your rain barrel regularly to be sure that it is not leaking, the hoses are clear of debris, and the top screen is securely in place. It is ideal to drain your rain barrel between rain events; use the water for your lawn, garden, or landscaping. Rain gardens require little maintenance. The first year or two it may require sporadic weeding. Once your rain garden is established, simply allow it to flourish and enjoy the natural beauty it brings to your yard!
