The Baltimore Water Alliance and Baltimore Community Foundation are seeking businesses, community groups, schools, and churches to exhibit 20 demonstration rain barrels. One barrel will be provided and installed free of charge at each site. Rain barrel locations must be publicly visible and accessible. Each demonstration site will be required to make available literature about rain barrels and upcoming water-focused community grants offered by Cleaner Greener Baltimore in 2011. Demonstration site addresses will be publicly available and barrels must remain in place through September 2011, though you are welcome and encouraged to keep them installed as long as you’d like. Participants can choose from two rain barrel options. Option 1: a recycled 55-gallon barrel re-purposed to harvest rain water. These barrels are blue or white but can be painted and decorated to match the building or display community artwork. Option 2: a pre-fabricated 60-gallon barrel made by EarthMinded. These barrels are terra-cotta or green in color.
For more information and to exhibit a rain barrel, please contact Dana Puzey at dpuzey@jonesfalls.org or 410-746-4170 by September 30, 2010.

9 interns through Baltimore’s summer jobs program, Youthworks, helped to water over 700 trees this summer as part of our green jobs program. With the summer drought we were having in June and July their timing saved a lot of these trees. Our Youthworkers learned green landscaping and nursery practices while building their resume and getting job skills. Each summer, we host interns through this program. We are very proud and grateful for this partnership and the class of 2010 did an outstanding job. A big thanks to the Youthworks crew Ben, Donnell, Emil, Jamil, Jerel, Malcolm, Matt, Tinae, and Tobias. The team was led by our outstanding team leader crew of Nick, Bilal, and Dierra.

On Tuesday, August 3rd, Darin Crew, HRWA manager, discovered a sewage overflow just upstream of Belair Rd. spewing raw sewage into Herring Run. The Department of Public Works was notified and quickly responded. Over the weekend, contractors fixed the overflow temporarily. I will post an updated estimate of sewage that entered the stream and if any new leaks occur until the permanent fix is determined. Please note that Baltimore’s Health Department recommends avoiding all contact with urban streams on an ongoing basis due to bacteria in the stream from sewage, pet waste, and natural sources.
